Why Home Pool Matters

The Barriers to Public Pool
Swimming Are Real.

For many older adults, the obstacles to swimming at a public leisure centre are significant: travel, cold changing rooms, busy lanes, group class schedules that move at a pace set by the youngest and fittest in the group, and the general self-consciousness of swimming in a public setting.

Private lessons at your home pool remove every one of these. Your coach arrives at your property. The water temperature is set to your comfort. The session is paced entirely around you. There is no one watching, no one to keep up with and no fixed programme to follow.

Swimming is one of the most effective forms of exercise for older adults precisely because water supports body weight, reducing the load on joints while still providing genuine cardiovascular and resistance benefit. Private instruction means that benefit is delivered safely, with full attention to your individual needs.

Health Benefits

Why Swimming Works
For Older Adults.

Physical

Low Impact, Full Body Exercise

Water supports a significant proportion of body weight, which reduces the load on joints compared to land-based exercise. This makes swimming accessible to those managing arthritis, joint pain or reduced mobility that prevents running or gym work.

Cardiovascular

Heart and Lung Health

Regular swimming improves cardiovascular fitness, helps manage blood pressure and supports healthy circulation. It is consistently recommended by NHS guidance as one of the most beneficial aerobic activities for older adults.

Strength

Muscle Maintenance

Water provides natural resistance in all directions. Swimming works the major muscle groups without the injury risk of weight training. Maintaining muscle mass becomes increasingly important after 60 for both mobility and metabolic health.

Balance

Coordination and Stability

The proprioceptive demands of swimming — body position, rotation, balance in the water — build coordination that translates to improved stability on land. Reduced fall risk is a documented benefit of regular aquatic exercise in older adults.

Mental Health

Wellbeing and Routine

Regular structured exercise has a well-established positive effect on mood, cognitive function and sleep quality. Swimming at your own pool provides a consistent, private routine without the logistics that prevent many older adults from exercising regularly.

Water Safety

Confidence Around Water

For those who are returning to swimming after a long gap, or who have grandchildren using the pool, water confidence and safety skills are practical as well as beneficial. We cover these as a standard part of every course.

Common Questions

Senior Swimming
FAQs.

I have not swum for decades — is it too late to start again?
No. Adults return to swimming at all ages, including those in their 70s and beyond. The body does not forget the basics of water balance and buoyancy, and the skills typically come back faster than expected. We start wherever you are and move at a pace that is comfortable for you.
I have arthritis and joint pain — is swimming suitable?
Swimming is one of the exercises most commonly recommended for people managing arthritis, specifically because water reduces joint load. We will discuss any health considerations before the first session and adapt the programme accordingly. We are not medical practitioners and ask that you consult your GP if you have specific concerns, but joint pain alone is not a barrier to swimming in the vast majority of cases.
What if I am not confident getting in and out of the pool?
Pool entry and exit is the first thing we address. We will assess the steps, rail and access on your pool before the session begins and ensure that entry, exit and movement in the water are all done safely. If your pool has specific accessibility considerations, let us know when you enquire.
How long are sessions?
Thirty or forty-five minutes is typical for older adult sessions. This is enough time for meaningful work without fatigue. We will recommend the right duration based on your current fitness level and goals.
Can I have lessons with my partner or a family member?
SwimFitz lessons are one-to-one by design — the coaching is individual and the programme is specific to each swimmer. If you and a partner both want lessons, we can schedule back-to-back sessions. Joint sessions are not available as they compromise the quality of instruction for both participants.
What water temperature should my pool be at?
We recommend 29–31°C for older adult sessions. Warmer water is more comfortable for extended movement and is easier on muscles and joints. If your pool runs cooler, we can discuss whether it is suitable or whether session length should be adjusted accordingly.
