We Come To You

Covering Chipping Campden

SwimFitz covers Chipping Campden and the villages around it — Broad Campden, Blockley, Ebrington, Mickleton, Weston-subedge, Aston Subedge and Willersey — across GL55, and into GL56 towards Blockley.

Almost every pool we teach in around Campden lives inside a building that was originally something else — a threshing barn, a cart shed, a stable range. They are beautiful rooms and awkward pools, and teaching in them well is a specific skill rather than a compromise.

Chipping Campden In Depth

What Teaching Here Is Actually Like

Chipping Campden was a wool town before it was an Arts and Crafts one, and both left their mark on the buildings. C. R. Ashbee moved the Guild of Handicraft here in 1902, and the instinct he brought with him — keep the old structure, adapt it carefully — is exactly how the pools around here came to exist.

Your pool is almost certainly a conversion

Barns, cart sheds and stable ranges, with the pool set into a footprint nobody designed for swimming. Expect collar beams at head height near the steps and a shape that is not quite a rectangle. We teach around it rather than pretending it is a lane pool.

Cotswold stone holds the cold

Thick stone walls take days to warm and give it back slowly, so a converted pool house can feel cold even when the water is 30 degrees. Air temperature matters as much as water temperature here, and it is the single most common reason a child cuts a lesson short.

The villages are strung along the escarpment

Broad Campden, Blockley, Ebrington and Mickleton sit several miles apart on steep, slow lanes. Where neighbouring families want lessons, we will block-book them into one morning rather than crossing the same hill three times.

Questions

Chipping Campden, Specifically

Broad Campden, Blockley, Ebrington, Mickleton, Weston-subedge, Aston Subedge and over to Willersey. GL55 is the core of it, reaching into GL56 as you go towards Blockley.
Hardly at all. It changes where the coach stands and how we run entries and turns, but stroke work, breathing and water confidence are unaffected. We assess the space on the first visit and plan around the beams rather than ignoring them.
Very, in a stone building. The walls stay cold long after the water is heated, so swimmers feel chilled the moment they stop moving. Keeping the cover on until we arrive and warming the air rather than just the water makes far more difference than another degree in the pool.
For technique, breathing and stroke correction, yes — most of that work happens in a width. For sustained distance swimming a short conversion pool will always be limiting, and we will tell you honestly when a swimmer has outgrown the room.
Yes, and around here it is worth doing. The lanes between these villages are slow, so back-to-back lessons at two houses in the same valley work far better than two separate visits. Each lesson is still one-to-one.
